Paarl in the Western Cape Winelands was first settled by French Huguenot farmers in 1688. The town itself was only established in 1720 with the construction of the NG Church. In 1800 there were still only about 30 houses situated along Paarl’s high street. Before the construction of the first railway line in 1863 between Cape Town and Wellington Paarl developed relatively slowly. However once the railways were in full swing on this route, trade and development flourished. Paarl became world-famous for it’s carriage, cart and wagon making in the late 1800s and farming in the area continued to flourish.

The streets of modern day Paarl are bustling with activity, restaurants, wine bars, boutique hotels and historical buildings and museums abound. Famous wines estates flow effortlessly down the Paarl Mountain onto Paarl’s high street. Paarl is also home to some of the best schools in the Western Cape making it a peaceful, safe family oriented environment.

Construction of a new shopping centre in Paarl South just off the N1 is under way and when completed will include 90 retail shops, including movie cinemas, Woolworths etc.

Being located right near the N1 – Paarl is not much more than half an hours drive from Cape Town.
